Hybrid Café and Grocery Golden Russet Takes Over Former Schultzville General Store Space

Golden Russet is a fresh start, in more ways than one. When the hybrid café and grocery store opened in July, it symbolized more than a new chapter for owners Craig and Jenny Cavallo, a Brooklyn couple who ditched the city for life upstate. It was also a second chance for the former Schultzville General Store & Café, a 200-year-old shop in Dutchess County that the duo purchased from its previous owners.

The Cavallos chose the name Golden Russet, a type of apple, in homage to the Hudson Valley’s apple and cider-making industries. Inside the space, local touches abound on both the café menu and in the grocery section. The café is open for both breakfast and lunch, during which time visitors can savor everything from ricotta toast with seasonal jam to breakfast sandwiches topped with produce from nearby Slow Fox Farm; and that's not to mention sea salt-flecked chocolate chip cookies or apple cake made with fruit from Montgomery Place Orchards. Golden Russet is also a destination for local beer, cider, and wine, with familiar names like Sloop and Suarez Family Brewing on draft.

“Golden Russet is the extension of two individuals who have merged their life’s journeys and made their separate perspectives one,” the Cavallos declare. “We want that to be apparent as soon as you come in, whether it’s to eat, say hello, or sit at the counter and read the paper.”
