About Us — The Backstory

In 1996, conservationists and journalists, Janet Crawshaw and Jerry Novesky took an eight-month sabbatical, traveling 35,000 miles across the country seeking authentic American experiences. They found that local farms, bakeries, fish markets, wineries and breweries were the key to understanding the country’s distinct regions. Inspired by their trip and the then nascent Chefs Collaborative movement, the couple returned to their home in the Hudson Valley intent on awakening the region’s food consciousness. The first issue of The Valley Table rolled off the press in 1998.

Working with a distinguished group of chefs, restaurateurs and tourism leaders, the couple launched Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) in 2006. The two-week culinary event premiered with 70 restaurants. Today, with more than 200 participating restaurants spanning 7 counties HVRW is among the largest Restaurant Week events in the country.

Recognized by The Daily Meal as one of 20 Great Food Magazines You Should Know AboutThe Valley Table magazine celebrates the food traditions, innovations and agricultural heritage of the Hudson Valley–local, seasonal and sustainable.
