WARM, GLAZED AND PILED HIGH with decadent toppings, Glazed Over Donuts, the latest addition to Beacon’s burgeoning food scene, is bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “sugar rush.” But Lisa Tompkins, who co-owns the shop with her husband, Ron, says the response to the venture surprised her. “We came in thinking, ‘We’ll start up a quiet little donut shop and maybe people will come by.’ On our first day open, lines were out the door.”

“Customizable” may be the key word that distinguishes Glazed Over’s donuts from others. Customers place orders on a clipboard (with a choice of 8 house-made glazes, 13 toppings and 9 drizzles), then watch through a glass panel as their donuts are prepared—from frying to frosting. Perhaps not surprisingly, the interactive experience is a hit with kids. “We’re thinking about adding a step up in front of the counter so the little ones can see in,” Lisa says. “They get so excited about it.”

While the combinations are nearly endless (you do the math), the reigning pick is maple glaze with bacon and maple syrup drizzle. If that doesn’t satisfy your sugar craving, watch for donut ice cream sandwiches this summer.
