I’m not too proud to admit that cold, wintry days make me contemplate hibernation, but every time I venture outside my comfort zone I’m reminded that the Hudson Valley is always up and at ‘em—if you know where to look. This is why I’m so pleased to bring you the winter issue of Valley Table, brimming with ways to enjoy the bounty of our region, even when tempted to burrow under the covers.
For a cheery dose of get up and go, consider shipping a local craft sip straight to your door now that state law allows it, as you’ll read on page 10. Then, step out on a day trip inspired by “Shelf Life” (pg. 18) to see how our clever general store owners are reinventing the age-old concept with food-forward offerings and artisanal pantry provisions. Though if the weather proves just too frightful, cozy up with a meaningful feature, beginning on page 22, and learn how local Black farmers are reclaiming their agricultural heritage.
When cabin fever strikes, bundle up and bring a warm Hudson Valley welcome to the newcomers we highlight in our Table Talk department: wood-fire pizza (and wine!) in Piermont and the sprawling Klocke Estate in Claverack, with its on-site distillery and chef-led fare.
If all this fails to brighten a dreary day, dig into one of our kitchen-warming recipes; I bet those molasses spice cookies will pair perfectly with the hard cider that’s due to arrive on my doorstep.
Here’s to an easy winter and spring’s swift arrival!
