Learn more about Tri Corner F.E.E.D.’s innovative market. Plus, a Nyack exploration experience will make day trips more enriching.
A new type of grocery store opened this summer at 56 South Center Street in Millerton. Operated by the nonprofit Tri Corner F.E.E.D., the market offers fresh, locally sourced and culturally relevant food at sliding scale prices. This means that customers pay what they can, without question, and that local farmers are well compensated. The store is open to everyone in Dutchess, Columbia, and Litchfield (Connecticut) counties, with no income documentation required. Produce, dairy products, meat, and pantry items from local farmers are available at the market, which operates Friday through Tuesday and accepts SNAP/EBT.
According to Feeding New York State, a local arm of Feeding America’s national network of food banks and meal programs, around 30,000 people in Dutchess County alone are food insecure.
Particularly in rural places such as Millerton, these residents tend to have less access to reasonably priced, healthy options. In 2024, Tri Corner EE.E.I). introduced a pop-up food market at the Northeast Community Center, demonstrating the high demand for affordable, fresh food in the area.
The new market builds on a number of the nonprofit’s current initiatives to increase food access and education in the region. The Food Sovereignty Fund helps compensate farmers who provide food for community efforts; the Rooted Resilience program promotes the viability of sustainable farms; and Community Advocates for Food Security is a volunteer group that works to raise awareness around food insecurity in the area. Locals can also lend a hand at the shop by donating to the cause or taking a shift unloading deliveries and stocking grocery shelves.
