Craving ice cream in the cold of winter? Luckily, some Hudson Valley stands remain open year-round.

Despite being a refreshing summer treat, ice cream can be appealing even in the middle of a winter chill. When a sweet fix is needed during the colder months, these Hudson Valley ice cream shops will have it on the menu.

Boice Bros Ice Cream

Kingston

For a family operation in the Kingston area, check out Boice Bros. Ice Cream. This shop makes homemade ice cream, as well as ice cream cakes and pies. Enjoy coffee hard ice cream or lemoncello soft serve, with toppings included. Also available are banana splits, ice cream sandwiches, cones, milkshakes, parfaits, floats, hurricanes, and sodas.

Cherries

Stone Ridge

Cherries serves as a general store and hotspot for fresh food, homemade ice cream, and gourmet candy. A free cherry on top can be added to any choice of ice cream, which includes vegan and gluten-free options. Delve into a cotton candy hard ice cream, classic soft serve, or one of Cherries’ sundae specials.

As its name hints, Cherries shines on the sundae front. The make-your-own sundae option allows customers to choose a soft serve flavor, with add-ons like hot fudge, caramel, butterscotch, strawberry or peanut butter sauce, whipped cream, and the classic cherry on top. Soft serve can be substituted for hard or vegan ice cream at an extra cost.

Hudson’s Ice Cream Cafe

Central Valley

Hudson’s Ice Cream Café offers something for everyone, and that include free ice cream for birthday celebrations. This Central Valley hub has made it a mission to have options available for anyone who wants ice cream, regardless of potential allergies or preference for vegan alternatives. Try Hudson’s Ice Cream’s sea salt caramel flavor for a truly decadent dessert.

Joe’s Dairy Bar And Grill

Hopewell Junction

Joe’s Dairy Bar and Grill is a family-owned business that started in 2002 and seeks to serve food that is a part of positive foodie and family memories. Year-round, Joe’s Dairy Bar carries classic and special ice cream flavors, sundaes, and shakes with a variety of topping options that can be ordered in store or online. Try the cannoli ice cream or salted caramel milkshake.

Penny Lick Ice Cream

Hastings-on-Hudson, Mamaroneck

Founded in 2013, Penny Lick focuses on serving ice cream that fits the old-fashioned bill. It emphasizes local dairy, no artificial ingredients, and being nut- and sesame-free. While the brand has three locations, only the Ossining location closes for the season. Try the fresh mint chip or raspberry lime sorbet for a burst of flavor during the cooler months, and be sure to check out which options are gluten-free and vegan.

As a bonus during the winter months, locals can order pints and cakes through the ice cream shop’s website. Select which location to order through, then scroll the vast menu options. Pint flavors range from seasonal favorites like fall’s Drunken Pumpkin or winter’s Peppermint Stick to more classic options like cookies and cream.

Trailside Treats Creamery

Goshen

Trailside Treats has been serving Goshen since 2012 with homemade ice cream and gelato, as well as dairy-free and Italian ice options. While the trailside stand is closed for the season, the parlor is open for in-person and online orders. Savor a scoop of blueberry vanilla gelato or the warm brownie sundae, with homemade or gluten-free cones available.

In the mood for something different? Both Trailside Treats and Joe’s Dairy Bar and Grill offer an ice cream taco for those who want to mix it up from the standard cone. Note that Joe’s Dairy Bar and Grill’s variation is only available on Tuesdays to follow the Taco Tuesday theme.
